About Me

Hi my names Ellie I am 20 years old and I'm in a motorised wheelchair, I have Spinal Muscular Atrophy type 2.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) type 2, is a disease which robs people of their physical strength by affecting the motor nerve cells in the spinal cord and weakening my muscles. In the spinal cord there is a gene that produces a type of protein, that protein is needed for the healthy development of motor neurons but I am missing this gene,. This mean means I can't do certain things like swim on my own, walk, crawl, stand and eat. I  have a gastronomy in place to eat through as I have a weak and dangerous swallow, so all my nutrients go through a tube straight into my stomach. Along with my main diagnosis I also have Scoliosis, a curvature of my spine caused by my weakened muscles.

I don't let my condition hold me back from doing what I enjoy including going regularly to watch my football team play, going to the theatre, visiting my favourite places and spending time with my family and friends. I am currently studying Multimedia Sports Journalism at UCFB Wembley with the aspiration of becoming a sports journalist. I am constantly looking to improve and gain work experience, so please contact me if you are interested in working together.

I write about all of this in my blog..............please feel free to read.
