Crystal Palace vs Wolverhampton Wanderers
Updated: Aug 4, 2023
Hi everybody,
Hope you are all well
Sorry this took so long to post I recently started boarding at school so haven't had a chance to write it till now.
On Sunday 22nd of September I attended Crystal Palace vs Wolverhampton Wanderers at Selhurst Park. The weather was forecast as rain but we were lucky and only had mini passing showers, which only lasted about 2 minutes.
The game started at 2pm and it felt strange to be at football on a Sunday cause normally our games are on Saturdays. Palace started the game looking good, getting down the right via Joel Ward and Wilf Zaha, but nothing was made of the chances early on. Wolves had a poor start to the season winning none of their first 4 games; but they had a key chance in the 10th minute when we conceded a corner and they were nearly able to punish us in the box. This gave them more of an urgh to attack and this put them on the front foot. It wasn’t till the 24th minute that Palace got their first corner, but wolves were able to clear the chance before we could create anything. This was shortly followed by another Palace corner but again nothing came of it as Ayew tamely heads the ball leaving the Wolves keeper to catch it. Wolves had another opportunity in the game but was stopped by a superb save from Guaita. Nothing really happened after this in the first half.
It was then Half Time and during the match one of the people that work at Palace came round to see if we wanted any food or drinks so the stuff we ordered was ready to bring down at half time.
The second half started and it didn’t take Palace long to get on the attack as Schlupp was able to run at the Wolves defence but his cross was blocked, the ball ends up with McArthur who plays a pass to Ward and after the crowd urged him to shoot he does and somehow the ball finds its way into the back of the net. The stadium erupted and everyone was very surprised! The goal was put down as a Dendoncker own goal but this doesn’t take the credit off of Ward. So it was now 1-0 to Palace. The crowd was behind the boys in red and blue even more now and the atmosphere was amazing. This then gave Palace a lot of confidence and this showed throughout the rest of the game. In the 59th minute Patrick Van-Aanholt had to receive some treatment but luckily he was able to continue and looked to be alright after this.
In the 68th minute Roy made his first change of the game bringing Christian Benteke on in replace of Jordan Ayew, in all honesty I don’t understand why Roy is still giving Benteke chances like this, it’s been 27 matches and he’s scored 1 goal that is disgusting for a premier league striker and Ayew puts in a massive shift every match but still gets subbed off, you can see that Jordan was annoyed to keep being bought off and I don’t really blame him. Shortly after Wolves went down to 10 men after Zaha was bought down by Saiss who was already on a yellow, he was immediately shown his second yellow, would this make it easier for Palace?
In the 77th minute Benteke had a chance but yet again wasn’t able to make anything of it just kicking it straight at the keeper from 12 yards. Our second sub came in the 81st minute when James McCarthy came on in replace of James McArthur, that was a hard sentence for the announcer to say. The way Palace were playing your would have thought they had this game in the bag, when the forth official lifted up the additional minutes board for us to see 6 minutes we all knew it was gonna be hard but we were hoping the boys didn’t lose this lead. Schlupp had a chance in the 90+3rd minute but wasn’t able to do anything even though he was one on one with the keeper, was this the critical opportunity? In the final minute the unthinkable happened and that being Wolves were able to score IN THE 90+5th MINUTE!! omg this was a horrible moment making the score 1-1. As the game restarted the final whistle blew literally 2 seconds later so Palace only came away with 1 point, we definitely didn’t deserve this result in my opinion, if only they scored more of their chances! But at least it wasn’t a loss I guess.
After the game we went to the shop so I could pick up my final kit of the season and that being the white slash third kit, I decided to get Patrick Van-Aanholt on the back but due to me still being in kids size his name was to long so I abbreviated it too ‘PVA’ with the number 3. We didn’t stay behind to see anyone so we got home nice and early.
Match stats:
• Palace had a total of 49.9% possession, Wolverhampton had 50.1%
• Palace had a total of 13 shots with 4 on target.
• Wolverhampton had 13 shots with 4 on target.
