Trip to Wembley

Updated: Aug 4, 2023

Hello everyone,

Hope your all went.

On Friday 22nd of March I attended my first England international football match at Wembley, it was England vs Czech Republic and it was for the Euro Qualifiers. I went with my Mum and a few of my friends attended but due to Wembley being so big I wasn't able to see them. When we arrived there we parked in our pre-booked parking space and walked over to the stadium which wasn't far. We went straight into the stadium to find our seat, all the staff were very helpful. We were unaware Wembley was a no bag stadium and that my medical bags needed to have a special tag before arrival but the staff were very understanding and sorted the issue. We went to see how the disabled toilets were and unfortunately it didn't have a bed or hoist in, and in my opinion the room was big enough to have one. Before we went in I went to get a match day scarf and program. When we got to our seats we had a really good view (see pictures below) everybody was given an England flag on their seat to wave to support their team. England was going into the game with lots of first team players out with injury which gave the younger players the opportunity to play.

The game started at 7.45 and England got off to a quick start, the atmosphere from the start to end was phenomenal with help from the english band. Unfortunately we had an early injury with Eric Dier, he was able to continue for a while but in the 17th minute he had to come off for Ross Barkley. Czech Republic caught us on the counter but our defence was able to see it out. Within the next minute England had scored with an amazing assist from Jadon Sancho through to Raheem Sterling to make it 1-0 to England. England kept up their possession for most of the first half. In the 38th minute Sancho dribbled into the box but was pulled back by a Czech Republican but got straight to his feet before showing some skill by back heeling the ball through the defenders legs. No penalty was given.

There was one minute added time and all the England fans around me were leaving for half time when the referee pointed to the spot to give England a penalty, that was taken by Harry Kane and he scored making it 2-0 to England. The next piece if action was in the 59th minute when England had a chance cleared off of the line after all three strikers had a shot on target.

Shortly after in the 62nd minute, Raheem Sterling scored another goal making it 3-0 to England. For his celebration he lifted his top to reveal another t shirt underneath with a picture Damary Dawkins who had recently died of Leukaemia. This was a heartwarming thing to see.

In the 65th minute Declan Rice came on in substitution for Dele Alli, this was his first England game he had played in. Within 2 minutes Raheem Sterling had scored his third and final goal leaving him on a hat trick and making it 4-0 to England. Then the final England change in the 70th minute when Raheem Sterling was replaced by 18 year old Callum Hudson-Odoi making his senior England debut. He had instant impact when having a shot on target but unfortunately the keeper saved it but then in the 84th minute Callum unleashed a powerful shot at the goalkeeper who is only able to palm it away into the path of his own defender, who then scored an own goal making it 5-0 to England.

In 90th minute Hudson-Odoi was taken down and landed awkwardly on his shoulder, he stayed down but managed to carry on for the final 2 minutes of the game thankfully he was ok.

This was it, the game was over and the final score was 5-0 to England. What a way to start the year and start the Euro qualifiers campaign for England.

Match stats:

  • England had a total of 66.4% possession, Czech Republic had 33.6%.

  • England had a total of 13 shots with 8 on target.

  • Czech Republic had 8 shots with 2 on target.

  • England are currently top of group A's Euro 2020 table.

I would highly recommend going to Wembley as it is a very good atmosphere. I am hoping to go to more England games in the near future.

Thank you for reading
